Bikram Yoga San Jose is once again excited to be sponsoring the 2012 Cinequest Film Festival in which we see downtown San Jose come to life with over 100,000 people converging to experience over 200 film screenings including 60 US and world premiere films, events, soirees, meet ups and workshops.

Founder and Co-founder, Halfdan Hussey and Kathleen Powell respectively, are members of the BYSJ community and have kindly asked BYSJ to once again do a yoga demonstration. Members, you are invited to attend the screening of Life Happens on Friday March 2nd at 7:00pm in the California Theatre where you can enjoy a comedy spotlight screening starring Krysten Ritter, Kate Bosworth and Rachel Bilson, and also cheer on your fellow yogis witnessing an amazing and inspiring yoga demonstration.

Here is a short teaser for the film Life Happens:

Smart-mouthed writer Deena (Bosworth) and her retro-best friend roommate Kim’s scenester way of life is uprooted when, following a one-night stand, Kim gets pregnant and must accessorize her happy-go-lucky lifestyle with a baby. Unprepared in every way, Kim finds herself juggling a nowhere job, dating and motherhood.

Pick up a festival guide from the studio and join us in the festival fun. Tickets are on sale now and available at www.cinequest.org.

BYSJ is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank.
Did you know that one out of every 10 of our neighbors will be receiving food from Second Harvest Food Bank. Second Harvest currently feeds about 250,000 people in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties every month. This number has increased 48 percent since the start of the recession in 2007.

Through March, BYSJ is asking everyone who comes to the 7:15 am class on Tuesdays to donate $8 (optional) and/or bring in one or many of the following items and place in one of the big Second Harvest Food Bank Barrels provided and set up throughout the studio! Let’s nourish our community while nourishing our soul! Items most needed are:
- Meals in a can (stew, chili, soup)
- Tuna and canned meat
- Peanut butter
- Canned foods with pop-top lids
- Low-sugar cereals
- 100% fruit juices in single serving boxes

“Our relationship to what happens to us on the mat, can act as loving mirror and metaphor for our life outside of the room. By applying Yoga Principals to carry our practice out into the world, we can…
· Show up more fully in our lives
· Use internal resistance to expand into each moment
· Discover the power of stillness and breath
· Cultivate patience and courage
· Embrace form as a practice of integrity”

The 2012 USA Yoga Asana Championship, March 3rd, 9-6 pm and March 4th, 10 – 5 pm at the Hudson Theater in New York City. More than 150 yogis and yoginis from 28 cities around the country will compete to become the best man or woman to represent the United States.

Members, plan to watch this event live-streamed from the internet on our monitors both Saturday and Sunday. Visit www.usayoga.org and watch the beautiful video that illustrates and explains the mission of yoga competition.

Watch as the competitors do five of the poses from the Bikram series. You be the judge and notice the strength, flexibility and emotional control needed to do these postures in three minutes and with power and grace.

“Contrary to popular belief, competition starts from the Baghavad Gita, where it speaks of how one can control emotion in action, attain self-improvement, practice selfless love, and strive for perfection all through competition. It is through this type of competition that creates enhancement and self-discipline. Though yoga is supposed to be non-competitive and non-violent, there is nothing that says yoga cannot give practitioners the basic roots of a disciplined mind and a disciplined body. Just like the Olympic Gymnastics competitors, yoga champions are judged on their own skills, flexibility, strength, and poise, and not against the next competitor. It is almost universal that people want to improve emotionally, physically, and spiritually.” – Rajashree Choudhury

The USA Yoga Federation needs our help in order to fulfill the dream of one day making yoga an Olympic event. Visit usayoga.org to learn how you can help with a small donation of $25.
